They might just be a standard workwear staple to you and me, but black trousers are fast becoming the newest fashion item thanks to Meghan Markle.
The Suits actress has become something of a trend-setter recently, selling out the Strathberry tote 11 minutes after being spotted with it on her arm, and decimating the stock of an M&S wool-blend jumper.
It seems the latest thing that royalists (or Markle-ists depending on their inclination) are desperate to get their hands on, though, are her signature black trousers.
She was pictured wearing chic wide-leg black trousers by Veronica Beard on a recent visit to Edinburgh with Prince Harry, and sported a similar pair at an appearance in Brixton earlier this year.
She’s also been pictured many times wearing skinny black trousers, clearly agreeing with many of our ideas that they’re the ultimate ‘throw-on-and-look-smart’ garment.
According to fashion search platform Lyst, a huge number of people are already keen to steal her style. Searches for the term ‘wide leg black trousers’ rose by 40% in the 24 hours following Meghan’s visit to Edinburgh this week, and her appearance in Brixton in January.
Searches for ‘black trousers’ are up 19% year on year, and 40% since the beginning of the year, showing that the Markle effect isn’t just in our heads.
Since Meghan stepped out in this Alexander McQueen tux, searches of ‘black cigarette trousers’ have also soared 30%.
Basically, it looks like black trousers may be the new white shirt: A wardrobe necessity that we can put on and instantly feel more put-together.
The tip to master the art of the black trouser is to look for chic details and don’t be afraid to mix it up.
You don’t want them to look like school trousers, so something with sharp tailoring, grown-up detail, or a different length is the best way to go.
You also don’t have to be exactly like Meghan and wear with demure heels and a smart top. You can just as easily add some edge with a buckled belt, band tee, and statement loafers.

If history is anything to go by, it’s pretty probably that most shops will be coming out with their twist on the humble black trouser very soon.
Get yours quick before they sell out – like everything else Ms. Markle touches.
