Marchesa’s dominated red carpet choices for years.

All those ruffles, layers of tulle, and embellishment you’ve seen everyone from Sandra Bullock to Blake Lively? Marchesa.

But this year Marchesa was noticeably absent from the red carpet; a sea of black as part of the Time’s Up movement.

Why? Because Marchesa is the design label of Georgina Chapman, who also happens to be Harvey Weinstein’s wife.

It’d be a bit strange for the stars to wear a bit of Marchesa while protesting Hollywood’s culture of sexual harassment, abuse, and inequality, sparked by the revelations of Georgina’s husband’s behaviour.

So it’s not surprising that not a single person wore Marchesa for this year’s Golden Globes – but it does make a stark change from previous awards shows, where Marchesa dresses were all over the place.

Here are just a few Marchesa dresses worn to previous Golden Globes ceremonies:

Ditching Marchesa could be a sign of what’s to come for Georgina Chapman, suggesting that actresses will refuse to support someone with such a close relationship to Weinstein (Georgina has confirmed she plans to leave Harvey).

The move away from Marchesa takes on greater significance in light of rumours that Harvey Weinstein bullied stars in his films to wear Marchesa on the red carpet.

Back in October Felicity Huffman confirmed that Harvey threatened to pull publicity funding for her 2005 film Transamerica if she didn’t wear Marchesa on the red carpet. She ended up wearing Marchesa gowns to the films 2005 screening and the 2006 Golden Globes.

While it hasn’t been confirmed if other actresses were pressured into wearing Marchesa designs, the label was funded by Harvey and helped in no small part by the number of celebrities who chose to wear Marchesa at awards ceremonies. So simply wearing Marchesa could be seen as silent complicity in Harvey Weinstein’s actions.

We’ll have to wait and see if Marchesa will be able to stage a comeback, but for now we reckon the label’s dripping with too much controversy for any stars to go anywhere near one of their textured dresses.
