Water company knocks Google off top spot for best place to work in the UK

A water and sewage company has beaten Google, Apple and the BBC to be rated the best place to work in the UK.

Former number one Google slipped to 13th place in the rankings after a survey of employees found Anglian Water had the best working environment.

Staff said the east England utility business had created a positive culture with flexible working hours, investment in training and a friendly atmosphere.

Jobs site Glassdoor drew up a table of the best firms following anonymous feedback from staff and found Anglian won against other major brands Ikea, InterContinental Hotels, Shell, O2 and Wagamama – which all came in the top 50.

Employees of Anglian – which serves six million customers in east England and Hartlepool – said: The workforce is clearly proud, passionate and really cares about the work they do, which results in a really positive culture and working environment.

A company truly dedicated to putting customers at the heart of everything it does, with a strong focus on employee engagement.

Other firms praised by its staff included management consultants Bain & Company, said to have a fantastic culture, XPO Logistics, where everyone helps each other to achieve success, and social enterprise firm Bromford, where opinions matter.

More than 800,000 companies were assessed – and Anglian is the only utility company to make the top 10.

Andrew Chamberlain, of Glassdoor, said: In todays tight labour market, jobseekers are in the drivers seat when it comes to deciding where to work and they want to know the inner workings of a company before accepting a new job.
