The Queen could abdicate in three years time and let Charles takeover as prince regent, according to a new book.

The reigning monarch could step aside when she becomes 95, a biography from long-time royal correspondent Robert Jobson claimed.

She already agreed earlier this year her son would replace her as Head of the Commonwealth, which could be seen as her gearing up to retire.

But the claim, which was reported by Mail Online, has been rejected by other royal commentators who are not convinced Her Majesty is going anywhere.

Expert Richard Fitziwilliams said earlier this year the Queen would not want to cause drama like her uncle Edward VIII did when he gave up the top seat for her dad George V.

Charles At Seventy: Thoughts, Hopes and Dreams also included other explosive claims.

The book suggested Prince Charles knew marrying Princess Diana was a mistake and wanted to pull out of the wedding.

The future king apparently cried when he told friends years later about not wanting to get hitched.

Mr Jobson, who has been covering the royals for almost 30 years, based his biography on information he has received over the last 18 months while following Prince Charles on his official engagements.

Buckingham Palace declined to make comment when approached by Metro.co.uk.
