Prince Charles desperately wanted to pull out of his wedding to Diana, an explosive new biography has claimed.
The future king spoke of his frustration to friends years later as he knew their marriage was doomed to fail.
However, he was aware of the implications of calling off the wedding, saying it would have been cataclysmic.
The couple tied the knot in 1981, but had only met 12 times before they got engaged, Diana later said.
And fears over their incompatibility were not restricted to the princess, according to the new book seen by The Daily Mail.
Released to mark the princes 70th birthday, the book was penned by Mr Jobson – a veteran royal reporter of almost 30 years.
It includes several fascinating details, headlined by Charles thoughts on his marriage.
Mr Jobson writes: It hadnt taken him long – just a few meetings with Diana – to realise that they were totally incompatible.

Years later, he told friends: I desperately wanted to get out of the wedding in 1981, when during the engagement I discovered just how awful the prospects were, having had no chance whatsoever to get to know Diana beforehand.
Despite being unable to call off the wedding, Charles did not blame anyone in the unusual circumstances.
He only blamed himself for not getting to know his young bride – Diana had just turned 20 when they married at St Pauls Cathedral.
