A man armed with a knife who lashed out at a cyclist in an "unprovoked attack" has been jailed for four years.

Cecil Samba, 22, was captured on CCTV running up to the victim, who was riding on the pavement in Leicester.

Samba was holding a knife and could be seen attacking the man at about 3.30pm on 22 March 2018.

The cyclist then threw his bike at him as he tried to defend himself.

The unidentified victim was able to get away and Samba fled the scene as the bike was left in the middle of the road.

Samba, from Lewisham, southeast London, pleaded guilty at a hearing in June to attempted wounding with intent and threatening a person with a blade/pointed article in a public place.

He was jailed on Friday for four years at Leicester Crown Court for attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.

He also received six months in prison for possession of a bladed article. The sentences are to run concurrently.

A police community support officer who was in the area radioed for assistance but the victim left the scene before emergency services arrived minutes later.

PC Suhaib Khalid, who was the investigating officer, said: "This is yet another example of the damage that can be done when a decision is made to carry a knife.

"Samba is a young man who now faces many years in prison because of his actions that day.

More from UK

"Samba carried out an unprovoked attack on a man in a busy city street, and despite extensive enquiries to locate the victim, he remains unidentified.

"I hope that today's outcome serves as a warning to anyone intent on carrying a knife and using it against another person that we will carry out a full and thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice."
