Italians always seem to think that they have the best grub.
And this year, theyre quite right.
Because the worlds 50 best restaurants have been revealed and the top spot has gone to Italys Osteria Francescana.
The top eateries from around the globe gathered in the Basque city of Bilbao last night for the awards ceremony, during which Osteria was crowned the worlds best for a second time.
Under the guidance of head chef Massimo Bottura, the restaurant – which is known for recreating Italian classics – came out top back in 2016.

Second place when to El Celler de Can Roca, Spain, and third place to Mirazur, France.

The USA came in fourth with Eleven Madison Park and Britain…well out top offering came in at number 33, with The Clove Club.

Lyles took 38th and The Ledbury, 42nd.

But it wasnt the food that got most attention yesterday – it was the lack of gender diversity. Only four of the top 50 were headed by women.
In a bid to readdress the balance, the organisers have created an award for the Worlds Best Female Chef, which this year went to Clare Smyth of Core, Notting Hill.
But not everyone is keen to have a women-specific award…including Clare herself.
To separate (male from female chefs) for me is strange, but we dont see enough women coming through at the top and we need to do something about it, she said earlier this year.
I would love to see very soon that we dont need gender-specific awards because women will have recognition and there will be a balance in the industry. Hopefully well see plenty of women on the 50 Best list and there wont be a need for that award.
