Whether you spread it on toast, eat it out of the jar, or just curse the gods when it falls out of the cupboard and smashes on the floor, Nutella is delicious.
The winning combination of hazelnuts and chocolate in spreadable form outsells Marmite in the UK and, in news that will surely make the historians of the future judge us harshly, actually caused riots in France recently.
Ferrero, the company that produces Nutella, and its sister product Ferrero Rocher, consume 25% of the world’s hazelnut supply in producing the two products, and while it seems ridiculous that one out of every four hazelnuts currently in existence are owned by the Italian company, it doesn’t stop Nutella being fantastic on pancakes.
But what if you fancy mixing it up one week or, God forbid, Nutella has sold out at your local supermarket?
Here are ten alternatives to the chocolate spread that’ll avert such a crisis.
Nut butter company Meridian are a great choice if you feel bad about all the palm oil that’s present in Nutella.
Alas, this is nut-free. But it is made with Cadbury’s chocolate which, if you’re like me, will send you into waves of nostalgia for the 90s when a Dairy Milk cost 40p, and Cadbury’s was pretty much the only chocolate company you’d ever heard of.
If you’re going to replace the hazelnuts with anything, it might as well be something as delicious as Maltesers.
If not Maltesers, then coconut. Coconut works as well.
If you’re all fancy and shop at Waitrose, check out this rich Belgian chocolate spread.
Or if you’re even fancier and shop and Marks & Spencer, its chocolate spread is made out of Peruvian cocoa, which everyone knows is the best cocoa.
If you’ve never been to a Venchi before, stop what you’re doing and go there now.
Some of the Italian branches even have walls of molten chocolate. Literal walls of chocolate.
Sadly, their stores in the UK are only in London, but it’s probably worth the trip to sample their chocolate spread and other delicious treats.
Tiptree not only make jam that’s good enough to give Bonne Maman a run for its money, but it also make a pretty fantastic chocolate spread.
At £6 a pot, this isn’t one of the cheapest chocolate spreads, but can you really afford to live the rest of your life without having tried it?
