When I went gluten-free several years ago, there was one thing I missed the most: fish and chips.
Yet, these are usually not remotely gluten-free friendly.

Not only is the batter made with wheat flour but even the chips are out of the question since products are often cooked in the same fryer, which causes cross contamination. No, deep-frying doesn’t kill the gluten.
However, Coeliac-friendly fish and chip shops are now popping up all over the UK.
So, I took to Twitter to ask gluten-free folk all over the country to recommend their favourite free-from chippies:
The Real Food Cafe is in the top 60 fish and chip shops in the UK.
It’s accredited by Coeliac UK and has a complete gluten-free menu, including fudge cake.
I’m sold.
Fresh line caught fish and 100% chicken breast bites are some of the gluten-free highlights at this fish and chip shop.
You can even buy Coeliac UK accredited gluten-free vinegar to use at home.
Miller’s is also Coeliac UK accredited and won top fish and chip shop in North East England last year.
They have three dedicated fryer baskets and also serve BrewDog gluten-free beer.
Leadbelly’s is not accredited by Coeliac UK but came highly recommended on Twitter.
Most of the menu is adaptable to be gluten-free, including their fish and chips, which are cooked in a completely separate gluten-free fryer.
They also offer gluten-free burgers, roasts and four varieties of gluten-free beer.
Winner of 2017 Fish and Chip Shop of the Year offers a dedicated gluten-free menu every Monday.
There’s even gluten-free curry sauce too.
Located near the Norfolk Coastline, this chip shop offers gluten-free options, as well as the choice of having your chips fried in rapeseed oil or good old-fashioned beef dripping.
7. Rockfish, around the south west
This chain recently launched an extensive gluten-free menu and have invested in a dedicated gluten-free cooking area.
8. Vinegar Jones, Bowness-on-Windermere
The freshest fish (cod and haddock are line-caught) is available with a gluten-free batter every day of the week.
The Spotted Cow is a country pub in Angmering and offers a whole range of gluten-free foods, including fresh fish.
Wolfies of Hove has lots of gluten-free fans. It serves gluten and dairy-free options on all their fish, and uses dedicated friers.
