Donald Trump defends 'stable genius' tweets and brands book author 'a fraud'

Donald Trump has defended a series of tweets in which he described himself as a ‘very stable genius’ – by saying he was a ‘very excellent student’.

The US President boasted at a meeting at Camp David that he made ‘billions and billions of dollars’ and became ‘one of the top business people’ when questioned about the tweets.

Trump took to Twitter earlier today after his competency was called into question in a revealing book about him called ‘Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House’, by author Michael Wolff.

He wrote: ‘Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart.

‘I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star … to President of the United States (on my first try). ‘I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius….and a very stable genius at that!’

And in a rambling address to the media in the middle of his meeting with Congressional leaders, he branded Wolff a fraud and said he considers the book ‘a work of fiction’.

He said: ‘I went to the best college, I was a very excellent student, I made billions and billions of dollars and became one of the top business people.

‘I went to television and for 10 years was a tremendous success as you probably have heard. I ran for president one time and won and then I hear this guy who doesn’t know me at all.’

He added: ‘I consider it a work of fiction and it’s a disgrace that somebody’s able to do something like that.’

Trump said he never granted Wolff an interview for the book and blamed former adviser Steve Bannon, who he called ‘Sloppy Steve’, for granting Wolff access at the White House.

‘That’s why Sloppy Steve is now looking for a job,’ he added.

The tweets were another sign of Trump’s frustration at what he views as unfair treatment by the news media of his presidency amid a federal investigation into whether he or his campaign aides colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign.
