Stargazers across the globe were treated to the rare appearance of a ‘wolf moon’ lighting up the skies last night.
Spectacular images from around the world captured the incredible appearance of the first full moon of 2018, dubbed the ‘biggest and brightest of the year.

The supermoon appeared as New Year’s Day drew to a close, with the the peak happening in the early hours of the morning.
Its appearance was due to the moon being at its closest point to the earth during its monthly orbit – making it appear in the skies brighter than normal.
Last night’s moon was the second of three ‘supermoons’ to appear in the space of two months, and it follows on from one on December 3.
It is called a ‘wolf moon’ because Native American tribes believed wolves howled at its appearance.
A third supermoon is set to appear on January 31, with it potentially having a reddish hue because of the way the atmosphere bends the light.

NASA tweeted: ‘Tonight’s full moon will be the biggest and brightest of 2018.
‘Called the Wolf Moon, we’re it our #NewYearsDay moon and the most super of the three supermoons this winter.
‘Happy #MoonCrushMonday!’

While images show the moon in all its glory at Wells in Somerset and it can seen seen in the sky over Scarborough, North Yorkshire, while in Las Vegas the moon displays a brilliant and eerie orange hue.
