Germany already in second, shallow wave, doctors union says

BERLIN — Germany is already in a second upswing of the coronavirus pandemic, the chairwoman of a major doctors association has said.

“We find ourselves already in a second, shallow wave,” said Susanne Johna of the association Marburger Bund in an interview with Bavarian newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine on Tuesday.

She added that German hospitals were prepared, but that this time around they should take a gradual approach — clearing hospital beds for new coronavirus patients as infections rise rather than immediately reserving intensive care units.

There are currently 21,000 intensive care beds in Germany, with roughly half of those free at present. Some 270 COVID-19 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units, according to a register compiled by the DIVI association, which monitors emergency care provision.
