Make the most of the glorious sunshine today because April showers are on their way.

Dense fog has given way to sizzling sunshine across southern England, with the capital among those lucky areas expected to see temperatures hit as high as 19C.

But northern parts of the country, along with Northern Ireland and Scotland, are expected to remain cloudy with outbreaks of rain.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: The warmest places today are probably going to be down towards the London area.

We are already up to 18.5C in a few spots in London, so well probably get through to 19C before the day is out.

At the other end of the spectrum towards the north of Scotland you are looking at probably only reaching about 8 or 9C in spots.

So, there is a good 10 to 11C difference between the north and south of the country today.

Weekend weather Today: Rain across Northern Ireland and southern Scotland breaking up as it edges southwards. Showers in the far north, wintry at times with hail and local gales. Warm sunny spells further south once any fog clears, some showers in the southeast. Tonight: Band of cloud with a little rain pushing south across England and Wales, slight frost under clearer skies ahead of it. Widespread frost further north with a few showers. Down in Brighton and up in Norfolk temperatures are only slightly lower at 16C.

Moving up into the Midlands, Birmingham can expect highs of 13C while further north Manchester is slightly cooler at 12C.

The colder weather front will edge its way across the border edging further south on Saturday evening, with parts of northern England seeing their first widespread frost for a good few days.

That means Mothers Day will be a lot cooler.
