How to be more environmentally friendly in 2019

Instead of eating less, giving up smoking or cutting down on the wine why dont you try and save the planet in 2019?

Here are ten easy ways to make going greener your New Years resolution.

And none of them will break the bank or radically change the way you live your life.

Use your car less

Transport accounts for 26% of Britains greenhouse emissions and individual journeys in petrol and diesel cars make up the lions share of these on the roads.

Swap the car for public transport to make Britain greener, or why not get around by bike if possible.

And if you can walk the journey then that will be better for the planet and your waistline.

Eat less meat and dairy products

Meat and cheese might taste fantastic but they seriously contribute to your carbon footprint.

The journal Science revealed this year going vegan could be the best way for someone to help the planet.

University of Oxford researchers found cutting meat and dairy could cut down someones food carbon footprint by 73%.

Use less water

Can you spend a few less minutes in the shower each day? Perhaps sing just one less song under the water.

Wash your clothes at a lower temperature, go for 30 degrees because 40 degrees is just over the top if you want to cut down on water energy.

Have a look at your dishwasher, can it be more energy efficient?

Use less electricity

Off means off. Dont keep appliances on standby all day and night, that is a waste of electricity.

Unplug chargers, microwaves and computers when not in use.

And ask your electricity provider for a smart meter, which lets you know exactly what in your home is using up the most electricity.

Insulate your home

Everyone is a winner if you insulate your home properly.

Your central heating bills will be less and the planet will be better off because a well-insulated house takes less energy to heat up.

Also, nobody likes a draughty home.

Staycation instead of vacation

Not every incredible holiday experience is a jet plane journey away.

Use LED lights or low energy lightbulbs

Come on, it is not 1955, there are alternatives to using bright light bulbs to lighten the mood at home.

LED lighting saves so much more energy and they last for a lot longer, so will save you money as well.

Is there any need for a printed bank statement? All your incomings and outgoings can find very nice home online.

Also take the time to find out what junk mail databases your details are on and ask to be removed.

Get your own backyard compost or see if your area has a compost programme to join.

Turning food waste back into usable energy is great for your local and global environment.

Start hassling your local politicians

Find out which politician supports green initiatives locally and vote for them.

Or find out the ones that dont and demand they start caring about them if they want to stay in office.
