Former prime minister David Cameron said he hoped Tory MPs would back Theresa May in tonights no confidence vote.

We need no distractions from seeking the best outcome with our neighbours, friends and partners in the EU, he said this morning.

It comes as the prime minister cut short her trip trying to gain concessions from EU leaders, in order to fight the leadership battle with everything Ive got.

I hope Conservative MPs will back the PM in the vote today. We need no distractions from seeking the best outcome with our neighbours, friends and partners in the EU.

Interesting to hear Cameron talking about the EU in such glowing terms, given that hes the one who started this whole thing in the first place.

Is it time to wheel out this old classic?

Mr Cameron has mostly gone under the radar since losing the referendum and quitting as prime minister.

He said he planned to write a book in a £25,000 shed in his garden.

It is thought to include a wood-burning stove, sofa bed and sheeps wool insulation – quite a change from 10 Downing Street.

However, he has been sought out this week to give his opinion on the current crisis.

Approached by Sky News while getting into his car, he said on Monday: I dont regret calling a referendum. I made a promise in the election to call a referendum and I called the referendum.

Obviously Im very concerned about whats happening today but I do support the Prime Minister in her efforts to try and have a close partnership with the European Union.

Thats the right thing to do and she has my support.

He previously warned that leaving the European Union would be an act of economic and political self-harm.

Obviously, this was so concerning that the only thing left to do was start humming doo do doo as he left his position.

But enough about D-Cams highlight reel.

Lots of people werent too pleased to hear him weighing in on the confidence vote.

Its probably best if you just keep quiet at the moment. You got the country into this appalling mess, so just go away back to your shed.

In twenty years' time this will all be in the hands of an A-level history class, and I doubt the curriculum will judge your contribution kindly

Just go away back to your shed, Richard Matthews told him.
