Baby saved from dying of sepsis thanks to these warning signs

This baby was just hours away from dying of sepsis until his parents recognised the all-important warning signs.

Damian Unsworth and his partner Lauren Butterworth initially dismissed Alfies fatigue and temperature as little more than a bug.

But they followed their instincts and called the hospital after realising it was getting a lot worse and would not go away.

However, the then six-month-old tot had actually contracted sepsis - and only had an hour to live. Alfie was rushed from the family's home in Bury to by ambulance to Manchester Hospital where he was given lifesaving treatment. But had it not been for the fast work of the North West Ambulance Service, the tot would not have survived. He was able to go home four days later, and has gone on to make a fantastic recovery ready to celebrate his first Christmas.

Lauren told the Mirror: We noticed that Alfie seemed quite lethargic and had a temperature that would not go away.

We gave him some Calpol but it only worked for a short time before his temperature shot up to 41C again.

Also when we pressed down on his skin with our fingers it took around eight seconds for the mark to disappear, which is not normal.

Two hours after Alfies symptoms first appeared, he was rushed to Greater Manchester Hospital from their home in Bury, where he was given life-saving treatment.

Damian believes Alfie would have died if they reacted any slower.

Alfie, now eight-months-old, has made a full recovery following a four-day stint in hospital, just in time to celebrate his first Christmas.

The family thanked the first responders by dropping off some Christmas gifts at the hospital.

Damian said: We want to raise as much awareness of sepsis as possible and hope that Alfie will help other new parents spot those warning signs.

Sepsis: The Warning Signs

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the bodys response to infection.

If your child has any of the below symptoms, go straight to A&E or call 999.

  • looks mottled, bluish or pale
  • is very lethargic or difficult to wake
  • feels abnormally cold to touch
  • is breathing very fast
  • has a rash that does not fade when you press it
  • has a fit or convulsion
