Far-right marchers chased out of city by locals

Police made two arrests after far-right protesters attempted to march through Liverpool – but were chased out of the city by people living there.

Members of the so-called North West Frontline Patriots had organised the march on Saturday but were forced back into a train station by hundreds of locals chanting no to racism.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson, a Labour politician, celebrated the counter-protest, tweeting: Peaceful people power chased the fascists off our streets.

He added: Hope always defeats hate.

Hundreds of people turned out in much larger numbers than the half a dozen members of the far-right group, according to the Liverpool Echo.

They were seen fleeing into nearby Moorfield Railway Station and being escorted outside by police after being greeted by the huge crowds.

Chants of no pasaran were also heard by those carrying placards proclaiming No to the Nazis and migrants and refugees welcome.

Merseyside Police confirmed one person was arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace while the the other was held for a public order offence following the march.

A spokeswoman was not immediately able to say which group the detained individuals were supporting.

Those involved with the counter protest on Saturday ran from Moorfields station entrance to the stations Old Hall Street entrance to ensure the far-right group could not find another route into the heart of the city, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Later in the day, a suspected marcher posted on Reddit: We are being attacked by leftists, please send help.

They spoke about being trapped under Moorfields while a mob of braying leftists tries to attack us, merely for having patriotic beliefs.

The post failed to attract the sympathy it asked for. Instead one person responded: I think the democracy of Liverpool is suggesting that we dont want you here.

Another wrote: People dont like it when you advocate hate in their city, have a shit weekend mate.

Its not the first time far-right marchers have travelled to Liverpool but failed to make it beyond a city rail station.

In 2015, the now banned neo-Nazi group National Action had organised a White Man March through Liverpool, but two counter protests saw them pelted with eggs until they had to be locked inside a luggage facility at Liverpool Lime Street station for their own protection.
