Police have arrested a man after an explosion injured two people and caused a house to partially collapse.

Residents had to be evacuated after the blast in Poole, Dorset, at about 1.45pm on Monday.

A 66-year-old man, who had been in a first floor flat at the time, was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage with intent to endanger life.

He was taken to hospital in Bristol by air ambulance where he is in a serious condition.

A woman in her 60s, who had been in a ground floor flat, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Emergency services said the focus of their enquiries is on gas cylinders within the property.

Detective Inspector Jamie Halford of Dorset Police said: "We are continuing to liaise with the fire service to establish the cause and have launched a detailed investigation into the incident.

"I am appealing for anyone with information that can assist our investigation to contact us."

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the gas network firm SGN was "on scene and have isolated the gas supply; however, the focus of the investigation is on gas cylinders within the property".

The service added the road "remains closed but will be reopened as soon as debris has been cleared away safely".

DI Halford thanked people living nearby and other motorists for their co-operation with road closures and the evacuation.
