A driver was so high on drugs that he didnt know – or care – that he had lost a wheel.

The unnamed motorist took to a busy motorway in his battered car on one steel wheel rim.

The images were captured by North West Motorway Police and shared on Twitter.

They said the red Citroen hadnt been involved in an accident or collision but that the driver, in his early 20s, simply entered the network thinking this is acceptable.

The hatchback was stopped on the M60 between junctions 23 and 24, Ashton-under-Lyne and Denton, at around 10am on Monday morning.

It is not clear how far it had travelled but there are suggestions it had been driven all the way from West Yorkshire, where it is registered.

Police were alerted after passing motorists dialled 999 to report the driver.

Police can only carry out roadside tests for cannabis and cocaine.

One senior police officer said he hadnt seen anything like it before.

The images show the Citroen with extensive bodywork damage plus it has no offside headlights at all and only one wing mirror.

The nearside rear wheel is on its steel rim, which also appears to be bent and twisted out of shape.

The car was also uninsured.

Its understood the car was towed away and its not known whether any passengers were on board at the time.

North West Motorway Police said on Twitter that it wasnt a wind-up.

They said: Numerous calls from the public reporting a red Citroen driving on its rims.

Patrols locate the vehicle on the M60 and the driver has been arrested following a positive roadside sample in relation to drugs.

This is not a wind up, vehicle in question has not been involved in an accident today.

Driver under the influence of drugs has entered the network thinking this is acceptable.

Insp Neil Anson, from the North West Motorway Police, said the man would be questioned on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and other serious driving offences.

He said: I have not seen a vehicle like that come onto the motorway network before.

It beggars belief really. It had one full tyre missing. There were plenty of motorists phoning it in to us.

It was completely unroadworthy and the driver will now be questioned.

Insp Anson said it wasnt yet known how far exactly the car had travelled, but said it was on the motorway for quite a few junctions before it was stopped.
