Two runners collapse and die in front of families after crossing half marathon finish line

Two runners collapsed and died moments after finishing the Cardiff half marathon, police have said.

One of the athletes, a man in his 30s, was taken ill in front of his wife and one-year-old child, and the other, a man in his 20s, completed the race with his girlfriend before collapsing.

Both runners were rushed to hospital but tragically died on arrival.

Organisers of the Cardiff Half-Marathon said everyone connected with the race was devastated with the losses.

The two runners were treated for cardiac arrests.

The mens next of kin have been informed.

More than 25,000 took part in the 13-mile race which was held in ideal weather conditions.

One runner, who didnt want to be named, said: I heard someone was taken ill at the end of the race, but to discover two people have died is truly shocking.

It is a well-organised race with a lot of medical back-up.

Im just so sad for the people and their families.

The event, organised by Run4Wales, started at Cardiff Castle at 10am today and finished outside the Civic Centre.

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said: This is a terrible tragedy for the families. Our deepest sympathies go out to their family and friends.

The emergency services reacted to this terrible situation with great speed and professionalism. Everyone connected with the race is devastated.

They unfortunately become the first fatalities in the 15 year history of the race.

Both runners were immediately attended to by the medical emergency team on the finish line. Both were then taken to University Hospital Wales where they later died.

The Cardiff Half Marathon, founded in 2003, is the UKs second largest half marathon behind The Great North Run.
