Two schoolgirls claim they were told not to wear knee-length skirts because their curvy figures were too distracting in them.

Ellie and Jasmin said they were advised to wear shin length skirts instead or face detention.

The 15-year-old girls were taken shopping the day after by their mums to buy clothes so they would not get in trouble at Hounsdown School, in Totton, Southampton.

This meant they missed a day of classes and faced a humiliating process of trying on new skirts that satisfied the rules.

Ellies mother Gemma said: [They] said our girls cant wear the skirts as theyre too close-fitting on them.

[They] said its okay for girls with slender figures to wear the standard school skirt but its NOT okay for girls with curvy figures to wear it.

Since the initial incident the row has intensified and the girls have not been in school for 16 days because replacement skirts were also apparently not suitable, Mail Online reported.

Gemma claimed when she initially phoned school officials to find out what the problem was they were not clear in their answer and was just told to get new skirts.

She said the girls now felt insecure about their bodies and were going to get counselling to help.

Gemma added: Neither girl had body confidence issues before, but they have now.

Theyve been in tears, they think theyre fat and are feeling really bad about themselves.

The girls received support from outraged Facebook users after their story was posted online by Ellies aunt Carly Hughes.

A spokesman for Hounsdown School said: The school is unable to refer to or comment specifically about an individual student or complaint.

However, in the event that a student comes to school in uniform that does not meet the schools uniform policy, as set and agreed by the governing body, then in the first instance the school will contact the family to request alternative uniform.

We have, where needed, supported students and families to source appropriate uniform items for students even going to shops to get uniform to assist parents and students in meeting the schools uniform policy.
