A manhunt is under way after two armed men in balaclavas poured a "corrosive substance" on a car outside a Manchester primary school.

A mother is said to have been targeted after she arrived to pick up her two children shortly after 3.20pm in Parkhouse Street, Openshaw, on Tuesday.

The men, who were wearing dark clothes, are said to have smashed the car's windows with weapons outside St Barnabas C of E Primary Academy school.

Greater Manchester Police said the suspects then poured a corrosive substance on the vehicle.

Officers said a search of the area was continuing as they worked to find those responsible.

The force has been unable to confirm if the two children were in the car at the time, but added no injuries have been reported.

Inspector Colin Macdiarmid, of GMP's City of Manchester Division, said: "I know this incident will cause a lot of concern in the local community but I want to assure people in the area that we are responding and have officers working to find the men responsible.

"We will continue to have increased visible patrols in the area for some time and I would encourage anyone with concerns to approach one of our officers to raise them.
