British couple die during Thomas Cook holiday to Egypt

A British couple have died whileon holiday in Eygpt, tour operator Thomas Cook has announced.

One of them was a long-serving employee of Thomas Cook in its Burnley branch, which closed yesterday as a mark of respect.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed the pair had died.

An FCO spokesman: We are supporting the family of a British couple who died in Hurghada, Egypt and we are in contact with the local tour operator.

The pair were staying at the Thomas Cook hotel in the Red Sea resort Hurghada but how they died is yet to be determined.

In a statement Thomas Cook said: We are deeply saddened by the deaths of two of our customers while on holiday in Hurghada in Egypt, one of whom was a loyal and long-serving member of our Thomas Cook family.

Our focus is on fully supporting their loved ones. We are urgently investigating with the hotel and supporting the local authorities.

Head of Customer Welfare Carol Mackenzie at Thomas Cook flew to Egypt on Sunday to offer support to the couples families.

Hurghada is described on the travel firms website as the capital of the Red Sea Riviera, where beautiful beaches, vibrant nightclubs and world-class diving destinations await.
