A care home is being forced to shut amid claims vulnerable residents were tied to chairs with belts, were not being fed enough and not being given vital medication.

Muirhead Care Home was placed under scrutiny last month after a government watchdog carried out an inspection at the facility near Alford in
Aberdeenshire.

Inspectors said they discovered that residents were living in extremely dangerous and unacceptable conditions.

The Care Inspectorate took the case to the city sheriff court which granted an order to temporarily close the nursing home.

Karen Reid, chief executive of the Care Inspectorate, said: Our last inspection found highly distressing conditions. We saw evidence of vulnerable people being tied to chairs with belts, which is extremely dangerous and unacceptable.

Residents were not getting enough food. There were not enough staff on hand to help people who really needed support.

Some people were not given essential medicines. We found a lack of appreciation as to why these things are so unacceptable.

I welcome the Sheriff Court granting an interim suspension order preventing the care home operating after August 31, pending a full hearing.

We have made referrals to nursing regulators and the police, and are working closely with Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership to
support residents to move to other care homes where they will be cared for safely and with compassion.

An order was made at Aberdeen Sheriff Court to grant an Interim Suspension Order – meaning it not be able to operate after 31 August, pending a full hearing to consider formal closure.

Staff from the Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership will move in to the care home over the weekend to look after residents – something inspectors said they strongly welcomed.

Ms Reid added: Most care in Scotland is good or better, but we will not hesitate to address unsatisfactory and weak care wherever we see it. Anyone with a concern can call us on 0345 6009527.”

A spokesman for the care home said: The court has decided that the registration will be suspended in three weeks time. All measures are under consideration.
