A man has been detained after police were reportedly hit with plates during a rooftop siege in Manchester.

Officers responding to calls of an assault on Oldham Street were reportedly bomboarded by milk bottles, plates and liquid thrown from a second-floor window.

Greater Manchester Police cordoned off a section of the street after muliple police cars, vans and tactical support units arrived around 11.45am.

Eyewitnesses saw armed police rush into a three-storey building where a man was seen shouting out of the window.

Waiting police and ambulance crews took shelter behind their vehicles on the other side of a street before a fire engine was brought to the scene shortly before 1:30pm.

A police negotiator, along with a riot police officer and another crew member, were lifted to the level of the window in the fire engines cherry picker platform.

Mark Stevens, 26, said: I was in the area when all these police arrived.

It was scary but I didnt know what it was. Thankfully we got out before they put the cordon down but I hope it is sorted.

Annette Adams, 45 a carer from Oldham in Greater Manchester, said: Theres a guy who was been throwing things out of an apartment window but it must be something major for all of this police presence.

I hope no one is hurt though.

Police have since confirmed a man has been detained and the incident is over.

A cordon remains in place but appears it is now being scaled down.

GMP told Metro.co.uk: All road closures have been lifted on Oldham Street following the earlier incident.

A man aged in his 30s was detained at the scene. He was taken to hospital for assessment.
