The shock. The horror. One innocent tweet has caused shame, anger and even put the reputation of the great county of Yorkshire on the line.

Headingley Market tweeted #HappyYorkshireDay with a GIF of a teapot pouring tea into a cup, but, now make sure youre sitting down, the milk had been added into the pot.

Which in Yorkshire is tantamount to frying ferrets and there a torrent of tea based abuse was directed Headingley Market within minutes of its gaffe.

This picture terrified tea lovers inside and outside of Yorkshire (Picture: Twitter/HeadingleyMkt)

Tea lovers will happily debate the merits of putting the milk in first or last (Miffy v Tiffy) for centuries but jumping the gun and pouring it in the pot horrified everyone.

The countys proud ambassadors Yorkshire Tea even got involved after being asked about the milk in the pot approach.

Yorkshire Tea replied: Its mildly alarming, but we dont have it in our hearts to be mean to a local market!

Others were not as nice and poured scorn from a great height on Headingley Market, which had invited people to the Leeds market on August 11.

Benno said: Serve tea like that in Yorkshire, you would be excommunicated.

As this was an own-goal for Yorkshire, Lancashires tea lovers jumped all over it.

Andrew Smith tweeted: If that tea is Yorkshire, I will stay in Lancashire thank you.

Rovers Rob added: Youve shamed everyone in Yorkshire, letting people think we put milk in the teapot. Where are you really from imposter? Lancashire maybe.

Councillor Paul Brant even floated a conspiracy theory, tweeting: Victory for the Lancashire gif manufacturers (who secretly plot the downfall of Yorkshire day mwahahahahah)

Sensing an open goal other counties then started to get involved, Spencer tweeted: Happy #YorkshireDay to you too. If you want to pop down to Nottingham for #NottinghamshireDay youll be welcomed and shown how to make tea proper.

And then came the ultimate insult: Even Southerners are laughing at your tea.

Overwhelmed with the response Headingley Market apologised.

Wow! We definitely did not expect the response from an innocent GIF ? we apologise for the choice of GIF but we liked the teapot… Anyways, we don't sell tea so you won't be getting this at the market! ? pic.twitter.com/BJQYjzUkXc
