Over 50 firefighters tackle tower block fire in north London

Over 50 firefighters are tackling a fire which broke out in a high-rise block of flats in north London.

A sixth-floor flat is alight in a 23-floor tower by the North Mall in Edmonton, a spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said.

One man has been led to safety through an internal staircase while around 50 residents left the building before crews arrived, a statement from LFB said.

Thick black smoke emerging from the building can be seen in video footage from the scene.

Ten fire engines are on the scene after nearly 50 calls were received about the blaze at 5.39pm.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

Tottenham, chingford and Southgate fire stations are in attendance.

London Fire Brigade later tweeted the fire was under control.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: Ten fire engines were called to a fire in a block of flats by the North Mall in Edmonton.

Brigade control officers received nearly fifty calls about the fire which was very visible.

Part of a four bedroomed flat on the 6th floor was alight. Crews wearing breathing apparatus led one man to safety through an internal staircase and around 50 residents left the block before the arrival of the Brigade.

Ten fire engines from stations including Tottenham, Chingford and Southgate fire stations were at the scene.

The Brigade was called at 1739 and the fire was under control by 1910. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
