Harry Kane is close to ending the World Cup as top scorer, with the tournament drawing to a conclusion this afternoon.

The England captain failed to score as the Three Lions lost 2-0 to Belgium in the third place play-off on Saturday, but struck six times in his six games in Russia.

That total puts him two ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Denis Cheryshev – with only the final left to play between France and Croatia this afternoon.

French forwards Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe have each scored three in Russia, while Croatia have three players who have scored two goals each.

Kane equalled Gary Lineker's 1986 Mexico World Cup record for the number of goals scored in a tournament.

Lineker is the only England player to win the Golden Boot.

Kane scored in each of his first three games at the World Cup, with a hat-trick against Panama.

Speaking after the defeat against Belgium, the Tottenham striker said: "It shows we had a very good group stage, scored a lot of goals.

"I'm disappointed I couldn't get a goal in the last few games. We will see tomorrow. If I do it it'll be something I'm very proud of."

England are due to return from Russia on Sunday, but there is not expected to be a fanfare as the FA has decided against staging a homecoming event.

The squad are set to arrive at Birmingham Airport, which has advised fans there will be no public viewing area.

It said: "We haven't made the decision to not arrange a homecoming.

"We're handling the flight as the FA asked & the area of the airport doesn't lend itself to a viewing area. We understand you want to welcome the team but you'll not be able to see them. We ask you not to come to the site."

Didier Deschamps' French side are favourites to win the World Cup but the coach is well aware they were also fancied to beat Portugal in the Euro 2016 final, which they lost.

Deschamps captained France to victory in their first World Cup final in 1998 and on Sunday could join Brazil's Mario Zagallo and Germany's Franz Beckenbauer as the only men to have won the World Cup as both a player and a coach.

Croatia, led by coach Zlatko Dalic, are hoping to settle an old score with the French dating back to that 1998 tournament.

More from World Cup 2018

Croatia's World Cup dreams were dashed as France clawed back from a goal down in the semi-final to win 2-1, before going on to beat Brazil in the final.

The two sides will go head to head in the final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, kicking off at 4pm (BST).
