England fans are being urged to dig out their old waistcoats for the World Cup semi-final on Waistcoat Wednesday in honour of newly-appointed national treasure Gareth Southgate.

He might only be the third man ever to guide England to the last four of a World Cup but due to his sartorial elegance he will also go down as the man who revived the waistcoat from the wastelands of fashion.

Marks and Spencer has reported a massive 35% spike in sales of the £65 sleeveless garment favoured by the England manager.

And Gareth Southgate lookalikes are springing up across the land wearing the obligatory item of clothing.

Now, charity Bloodwise is jumping on the World Cup fever and is urging everyone to get involved in Waistcoat Wednesday by donning one of their own to watch England take on Croatia in their semi-final match.

While theyre at it, people are asked to make a donation towards fighting blood cancer.

The charitys website said: Show your support for Gareth Southgate and the boys ahead of Wednesdays semi-final showdown – and help give blood cancer the boot!

In honour of the England boss new-found football fashionista status, were inviting supporters to grab a waistcoat and button up to beat blood cancer.

Taking part is simple: proudly display one of our posters to encourage everyone to don their favourite armless attire, make a donation towards life-changing blood cancer research and get ready to celebrate as the Three Lions sail through to the finals.

Solihull England fan Sheila Grandfield is getting ready for Waistcoat Wednesday after watching the teams historic quarter final victory against Sweden yesterday at her local pub The Wharf Tavern.
