Teenager, 16, dies after being pulled from river in 27C heat

A 16-year-old boy has died after being pulled from a river after going swimming as the countrys heatwave continued.

The teenagers body was found after an hour-long search involving an underwater dive team, fire and ambulance crews and a police helicopter this afternoon at Colwick Country Park in Nottingham.

He was taken to the Queens Medical Centre but was pronounced dead at hospital at just after 4pm.

Witnesses spoke of their shock and worry as emergency services arrived at the scene.

Rosie North, 24, from Gamston, who visits the marina regularly, said: This is so sad to see. I felt my heart racing as I saw the emergency services arriving.

Its awful. I feel really worried. My thoughts go to those involved.

Matthew McCarthy, 45, from Colwick, said: Its my day off. I enjoy running round the lake and surrounding area in this weather.

Everywhere you look theres fire and ambulance services. Its horrific. Its really made me think how dangerous situations can be.

The tragedy occurred as temperatures hit 27C in the local area.

In a statement, Nottinghamshire Police said: A 16-year-old boy has died following reports that hed gone into the water off River Road in Colwick but not resurfaced at around 2.05pm today.

He was found more than an hour later, at around 3.20pm, following a major search operation.

He was taken to the Queens Medical Centre but sadly pronounced dead just after 4pm.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance service said: We received a call at 2.08pm to an incident at Colwick Park, Nottingham.

The caller reported a patient who was drowning. We sent a paramedic in a fast response car, a double crewed ambulance, our Hazardous Area Response Team and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

We worked closely on scene with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue and Nottinghamshire Police to locate and extract the patient from the water.

One patient was taken to Queens Medical Centre for further care.

An investigation into the boys death has now been launched.
