Nancy Fofana said she was walking to a supermarket near her home in Gloucester when the creature appeared from a nearby hedge in a housing estate.

The 22-year-old said: It had a pointy nose and long tail.

It turned and stared and started towards me. I thought it was going to attack so I ran.

Beavers became extinct in the UK about 500 years ago – but were reintroduced in recent years.

Nancy, who claims her sighting happened at 10pm last Sunday, managed to film the animal, which she believes came up from the nearby River Severn.

Professor Richard Brazier of Exeter University, who has seen the footage, said: Given its size, gait and the time of day, it looks like a beaver.
