Its a record-shatteringly hot bank holiday Monday – but someone forgot to tell Cornwall.

Heavy fog and cold temperatures have been recorded in Watergate Bay, the site of the championship, on Cornwalls northern coast.

Bizarre photos taken on Monday show glum surfers staring out at the rolling fog over the sea, and spectators wrapped up warm in coats and jackets.

While most of the UK is basking in glorious sunshine, the likes of Newquay and St Ives in Cornwall and parts of Devon, including Ilfracombe, have not been so lucky.

While the majority of the UK is bathing in bright sunshine and record May Bank Holiday temperatures, visitors to Cornwall's Watergate Bay for the English National Surfing Championship were met with heavy fog and a cold breeze, forcing them to wrap up well just as a winter's day. 7 May 2018

They are among the few areas missing out on some seriously hot weather, with Britain set to be warmer than Mexico on a record-breaking bank holiday Monday.

Thermometers were expected to peak at 29C, making Monday the warmest early May bank holiday Monday since the holiday was introduced in 1978.

The Met Offices Charlie Powell said: Were looking at top temperatures of 27-28C, possibly 29C in and around London, but well above average for the time of the year.

Meanwhile, Mexico City is a comparatively chilly 22C.

But dont get too used to the good weather, as forecasters have warned the mini-heatwave could come to an end on Tuesday.

It is expected to gradually turn cooler through the end of the week, with early predictions suggesting London is set for rain and highs of just 15C on Friday.
