A 63-year old grandmother who was released from Yarl's Wood in the wake of the Windrush scandal has told Sky News it is up to Theresa May "to put it right".

Yvonne Smith was held in the immigration removal centre for nine months after being told she was in the country illegally.

She is fighting to get a British passport.

Her 92-year-old father, who came to the UK in 1957 aboard Empire Windrush, believed she was being deported to Jamaica.

Ms Smith says officials told her she had "no ties to this country" despite having four generations of family in the UK, and said the NHS and other family members could look after her elderly father.

"I believe it's time for the government to step in and do something for these people that have been here almost 20 years," she told Sky News.

"Theresa May – she has to put it right. I've been treated like I'm a criminal and I'm not a criminal."

On Saturday afternoon, Ms Smith will be joining hundreds of people expected to protest outside Downing Street over the handling of the Windrush scandal, where people were asked to move from Commonwealth countries to the UK in the decades following World War Two but were subsequently threatened with deportation.

Up to 3,000 people have been identified as potential victims.

Stand Up To Racism, the organisers of the march, say: "The Windrush scandal has highlighted the racism at the heart of the Tories' immigration strategy.

More from UK

"The 'hostile environment' created by Theresa May has targeted a generation of people who were invited from Commonwealth countries as UK citizens only to deport them and attack their rights once they have made their contribution to society."

Protesters' demands include that those deported must be brought back to Britain immediately and that the protection of all Commonwealth citizens is guaranteed.
