John McDonnell accused of telling Tory MP to 'get back in your box woman'

Labours John McDonnell was accused of being sexist by Tory Minister Claire Perry during a heated on-air row last night.

The pair appeared on the BBCs live coverage of the Local Election where they argued with and spoke over each other as the results started to come in.

Ms Perry criticsed Mr McDonnell for not apologising after allegedly saying Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey should be lynched.

But Mr McDonnell was accused of sexism after he interjected and waved his hand at Ms Perry, who claimed his gestures were telling her to get back in your box woman.

The extraordinary row left presenter Hugh Edwards speechless and he struggled to get a word in as the two rival politicians traded verbal blows.

During the clash Ms Perry demands Mr McDonnell apologise, who interrupts to say: I am not accepting this, the campaign is over.

He then waves his hand at Ms Perry in an attempt to stop her from talking over him – which she interprets as a sexist move telling her to be quiet.

Mr McDonnell replies: That is completely unacceptable in a programme like this.

The two rowed on a local election night which saw Labour fail to gain control of a single council targeted by Momentum and its Unseat campaign.

Of the 10 council areas where Unseat events were held, five resulted in victory for the Conservatives, two in no overall control, and three are yet to be announced.

While UKIP suffered a collapse in its vote, losing seats to the Tories in areas such as Basildon – leading to a former deputy chairman of Ukip has openly discussing the possible demise of the party.
