Ms Rudd has faced growing pressure to resign in recent days amid claims she misled Parliament over targets for removing illegal migrants.

She telephoned Mrs May to offer her resignation on Sunday.

A No 10 spokesman said: The prime minister has tonight accepted the resignation of the home secretary.

Her resignation follows the Windrush generation scandal, which led to long-term British residents questioning their immigration status.

In response to the announcement, Tom Watson, Labours deputy leader, told Metro.co.uk: Amber Rudd has done the decent thing, which is clearly taking responsibility for a policy which was made by Theresa May.

Ms Rudds position was called into question after it became apparent the Home Office had set targets for deporting illegal immigrants.

She had previously denied being aware of any targets.

Despite insisting she did not know of the targets when she gave evidence to the Commons Home Affairs Committee last week, Ms Rudd has quit following the emergence of mounting evidence revealing their existence.

It followed fears over the immigration status of members of the so-called Windrush generation.

Long-time British residents who arrived from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971 have feared losing access to medical treatment or even being deported during the scandal.

Many had been unable to produce paperwork proving their right to live in Britain.

Ms Rudd took up the position of home secretary in 2016 when her predecessor Mrs May became prime minister.

Mrs May has apologised to the black community in a letter to Caribbean newspaper The Voice.

She wrote: We have let you down and I am deeply sorry. But apologies alone are not good enough. We must urgently right this historic wrong.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove was being touted as the early front runner to replace her at the Home Office.
