Heroic runners help each other to finish line of hottest London Marathon on record

Theres nothing quite as inspiring as the London Marathon.

More than 40,000 runners of all abilities came together today to run 26.2 miles across London.

But people set the competition aside and helped each other cross the line as temperatures peaked at 24.1C.

For some of the participants, the heat and strain became too much as they neared the finish line.

Many exhausted runners collapsed on the ground and one man was carted over the finish line by medical staff on a stretcher, proving nothing was going to stop him from completing the race.

Runners train for months to be able to undertake the gruelling course across the nations capital but after the bitterly cold winter months they may not have had enough time to adjust to the heat of today.

Emergency mobile water stations had to be dispatched after stations ran out of water between miles eight to ten.

In this heat, it would have been vital for competitors to stay hydrated.

Race organisers had previously urged runners to reconsider aiming for personal bests and suggested ditching fancy dress costumes.

Sir Mo Farah managed to break the British record today but even he nearly lost his cool after he was handed the wrong water bottle at the start of the elite mens race.

He told the BBC: I was confused. Some of the staff tried to take a picture rather than give me a drink at the start. Can you tell the staff to be a little bit more helpful. Mine and one of the other guys drink was exactly the same.

Meanwhile Lily Partridge became the first British athlete to complete the gruelling 26 mile course in under two and half hours.

But it wasnt quite quick enough to beat Paula Radcliffes marathon world record of two hours and 15 minutes.

The four-time British Olympian ran the impressive time in 2003.
