What happened when I stopped eating for a month
Coming across a cheap eat in these circumstances is pretty rare – even to grab a sandwich it’s easy to end up forking out about £4.
So, as we near the end of January, here are some of the best eateries in the capital to dine gluten-free that won’t break your bank balance.
1. Chipotle
If you love a bit of Mexican, this is the place for you.
If you leave out the soft tortilla wrap, everything else on the menu is gluten-free.
We’re talking crispy tacos, sumptuous rice bowls and salads.
Load up your dish with your choice of filling, with veggie starting at just £7, stretching to £7.40 if you go for steak or pork.
Grab a bag of guacamole and tortilla for £2.60; that means dinner could still come to under a tenner.

2. Leon
Leon is a great grab-and-go option for a gluten-free meal under £7.
Choose from a collection of rice boxes or a vegan mezze.
The £2.35 baked fries should be on the list whatever the occasion.

3. Beyond Bread
The perfect place for brunch, coffee and a delicious gluten-free sandwich under a fiver.
Choose from delicious fillings such as pulled pork, chicken caesar or sweet potato falafel.
It also does gluten-free quiches at £4.95 and soup with bread at £8.50.
Beyond Bread is 100% gluten-free and located in Fitzrovia, Oxford Street and Islington.
4. Squirrel
Want a salad? Want to grab and go? Or want to sit in a cute little tree house?
Squirrel ticks all these boxes.
Options include Thai salad, a ginger rice bowl, and curried rice. They all come in under £10.

5. Flat Iron
Meat eaters rejoice, Flat Iron is the one for you.
Delicious and succulent, its steaks are just £10.
Gluten-free fries or creamed spinach can be added for £2.50.
That’s an atmospheric meal out for just £12.50.
Flat Iron can be found in Soho, Shoreditch and Covent Garden.
6. Station 26
Another totally gluten-free joint.
Sit in and enjoy a halloumi burger for just £10 or a chicken schnitzel or pork ribs for £10.50.
Station 26 is nestled in Brixton Market.
7. Drake & Morgan
For January only, Drake & Morgan is offering its Beef, Reef & Bubbles deal for just £9.95.
That’s two prawns, a steak medallion and a glass of prosecco for under a tenner.
You can upgrade to lobster too for £19.95.
Sides are not included, so add an extra £3.25 for chips.
Drake & Morgan bars are spread across London.
8. Senzala Creperie
Grab yourself a gluten-free ‘galette’ pancake made of buckwheat and you have a whole host of fillings to choose from.
The cheese filling is just £4.60 and then range from £7.90 to £10.20 for other fillings such as goats cheese and caramelised onion, and smoked salmon with creme fraiche and asparagus.
