Five men were stabbed in a fight at a Great Gatsby-themed New Year’s Eve party.
Police were called to Crystal Bar, on Carver Street in Sheffield, at around 2.20am on Monday following the altercation.
Two men in their 20s are fighting for their lives in hospital while three others, also in their 20s, suffered superficial injuries.
The bar was issued with a 24-hour closing notice following the violence.
Sheffield Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley said: ‘The closure order has been authorised as a result of this morning’s altercation.
‘We have reviewed the incident and surrounding circumstances and we believe that to protect the public, the closure order is necessary.
‘The use of senseless violence in one of our city centre licensed venues is something that will not be tolerated.
‘We will work tirelessly to catch those responsible and South Yorkshire Police is determined to ensure these issues are proactively and effectively tackled.’
An invite to the event said guests would be welcomed with a Prosecco and canapé reception to ‘the biggest party of the year’.
VIP packages promising private booths and a bottle service were being offered to guests for £1,000 each.
Before the event, Crystal Bar posted on its Facebook page: ‘Expect a mind blowing end to 2017 as we countdown to midnight in style as Crystal this year is presenting a New Year’s Eve never seen before in Sheffield.’
Forces across the country endured one of the busiest nights of 2017 as a wave of violence marred celebrations.
