The bodies of two alleged thieves were fused together after they were electrocuted by 24,000 volts in a substation they were reportedly trying to steal copper wire from.

One of the men is believed to have touched a 24,000-volt transformer and transferred the current to the other man, killing them both.

The pair were found at a Detroit Public Lighting Department substation around 6.50am on Friday.

Their bodies were so badly burned they were fused together.

Police captain Kyra Hope told The Detroit News: ‘We have two, that we know, two black males.

‘One of them apparently touched 24,000 volts, and then transferred over to the other one.’

She added: ‘It’s very gruesome – very, very gruesome.’

Police confirmed the pair were not employees and broke into the substation with tools to steal copper from inside.

Dave Fornell, deputy fire commissioner of the Detroit Fire Department, said: ‘The only reason they would be in there is if they were stealing something.

‘A substation is a maze of wires and open conductors and that type of thing.’
