Prince Harry will reportedly miss out on his family’s traditional Boxing Day shoot to keep animal-lover Meghan Markle happy.
The tradition – which Prince Harry, 33, first took part in 21 years ago when he was 12 – takes place on the Sandringham estate and gamekeepers there are said to be surprised by the decision.
Man dies in devastating flat fire on Christmas Eve
Harry’s father Prince Charles and his brother Prince William are believed to be still taking part in the event on the 20,000 acre grounds in Norfolk.
Prince Harry is known to be a keen hunter and earlier this month flew out to Germany to take part in a boar hunt whilst Meghan Markle was away filming in Canada.
A royal insider told The Sun: ‘The Boxing Day shoot was always going to be a tricky issue. Meghan is a keen animal rights campaigner and doesn’t like hunting in any form.
‘Harry loves it and has always been out there on Boxing Day. But if it means breaking with long-standing royal traditions to avoid upsetting her, so be it.
‘It’s fair to say that there are some pretty stunned faces around here.’
An unnamed friend of Harry was quoted as saying: ‘If Meghan’s not comfortable with him doing the shoot, he wouldn’t want to upset her.’
Do you have to go back in the closet for Christmas?
Prince Harry and Meghan were due to arrive in Norfolk last night and will stay with William and Kate at Anmer Hall, near to the Sandringham estate.
Meghan, star of the TV drama Suits, is the first unmarried partner to join the royal family during the Christmas period.
Yesterday news broke that she was left worried when her rescue dog Guy broke two of his legs.
The beagle was injured shortly after the couple’s engagement was announced in November.
Her much-loved dog is said to be receiving treatment from television vet, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, in Surrey.
The former Suits star has given up her home in Toronto, where she has lived for the past six years while filming the US legal drama, to move in with Harry at Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace ahead of their 2018 wedding.
