Cruel dog owner left pets chained up outside in Beast from the East snow

A pet owner left his two dogs chained up in the snow with horrific open wounds at the peak of Britains Beast from the East cold weather.

Derrick Dawkins, 56, has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years after he left English bull terrier Dessa and Staffordshire bull terrier Diesel outside in March as temperatures plummeted.

The dogs were discovered in thick snow in Dawkins back garden with untreated wounds on their skin. One of the dogs had become entangled by the chain used to tie it up.

The terrified pair were left outside day and night with no appropriate shelter to fend for themselves, the RSPCA said.

Animal inspector Phil Mann, who found Dessa and Diesel, said he worried they would have been dead by morning if they had spent another night in the cold.

He added: Simply leaving pets outside to fend for themselves without shelter should never be seen as an option.

Dogs must have constant access to a suitable shelter, and owners should also ensure bedding and sleeping areas are warm, dry and away from any draughts.

It is shocking that Dawkins left these dogs outside during such horrendous conditions and even more heartbreaking to discover they had been left to suffer with painful, untreated sores.

Dawkins, from Gloucester, avoided jail but was handed an 18 week suspended prison sentence and fined £865.

Dessa and Diesel have both now recovered from their ordeal while in the care of the team at the Cotswold Dogs and Cats Home.

The team is working with Diesel to prepare him for rehoming, while five-year-old Dessa is already looking for a special someone to give her a second chance.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: Dessa loves nothing more than spending time with people and playing with toys.
