Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters have tackled a blaze in a flat on the 12th floor of a tower block in east London.

London Fire Brigade said it was alerted to the fire at Grafton House in Wellington Way, Mile End, at 12.28pm and received more than 90 calls.

Around 44 people had left the building before emergency services arrived at the scene.

A further two people were led to safety by crews. There were no reports of any injuries.

Footage showed flames and smoke billowing from the high-rise flat as firefighters used an aerial ladder platform to get closer to the blaze from outside the building.

"Firefighters are working hard at the scene of the flat fire," the brigade tweeted.

It added the blaze was "under control" by 1.51pm.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Residents gathered at the foot of the tower block where police set up a cordon and urged people to make their way to nearby Merchant Street community centre for advice.

Rising smoke could be seen from a distance across the capital with people posting images and videos on social media.

Most of a three-roomed flat on the 12th floor was damaged by the fire and part of the balcony of the 13th floor.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We assessed three people at the scene but did not take them to hospital."

Eastend Homes, the housing association responsible for the block, said no one was hurt and all residents were safely evacuated.

A spokeswoman said: "Everybody is safe, some residents have gone to a nearby community centre where they are getting support and refreshments."
