A talented nine-year-old chess player given the honour of making the first move at a World Championship match could be deported from the UK.

Shreyas Royal has been described as the most promising player of his generation, and has lived in the UK since he was three.

But the chess prodigy is due to be sent back to India in September when his fathers visa runs out, i News reported.

His parents, Jitendra and Anju Singh, moved to south east London from India in 2012, and they hope Shreyas talent will help them stay.

Mr Singh, 38, is appealing to the Home Office on the grounds that his son is a national asset.

He told the newspaper: Shreyas life is here – he has roots. It will be a massive shock for Shreyas.

He will not be able to continue his chess, it really is a terrible situation.

Shreyas dreams of being the next Magnus Carlsen, what an honour it would be for my son.

World Chess has given the young boy the honour of making the first move in a London world championship match featuring Carlsen, the current world champion, in November.

Metro.co.uk has contacted the Home Office for a statement.
