Filmmaker Nathan Rae, 37, mapped out a running route then spent 18 hours straight running the streets of Manchester to create the GPS art heart with the letters MCR in the centre on Tuesday.

Mr Rae, who has been running ultra marathons for several years, set off just before 8am on Tuesday and ended at Manchester Arena just before midnight.

He designed the route to take in special locations, such as the Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital, fire stations, and finally the arena.

Along the way, he was joined members of his club, Chorlton runners, along with members of other clubs and a little boy and his dad, who ran with him part of the way.

The 37-year-old, from Chorlton, said he chose the shape of a heart, with the initials MCR spelled out inside, for his route as a celebration of the citys response to the bombing.

He said: The bombing was awful but the response afterwards by Manchester was just amazing and I wanted to capture the spirit of that a year later.

I picked the heart shape because there was a piece of artwork in Manchester with 22 bees and a heart around it. I couldnt draw a bee on the map so I went for the heart.

He described his route as GPS art with the pattern showing up on apps including Strava and Garmin maps.

Mr Rae added: It was great, normally on an ultra marathon you run by yourself for a long stretch so having people run with me really, really helped.
