A homeowner has been ordered by officials to get shot of his latest garden ornament - a 15ft cannon. Builder Mark Stephens snapped up the cannon for the countryside home being renovated in a beautiful national park. But planning officers in the Brecon Beacons National Park in mid-Wales have Mark in their line of fire - and let off a salvo to ban the cannon. Should you have the right to install a 15ft fibre-glass fake cannon in your garden?

Mark Stephens thinks you should – and is angry with planners who told him he has to get rid of it.

The builder thought the cannon would be a perfect addition while renovating his countryside home in a national park.

But Brecon Beacons planning officers felt differently.

Mark, 51, bought the fibreglass cannon as an oversized garden ornament from a salvage company after it was used as a prop by an opera company.

He said: I thought it could be a feature in my garden and it would be a bit of fun – and Ive got an old red telephone box as well.

Some people have statues of lions and I was going to have a cannon in my garden.

Its a fibreglass theatrical prop, it is never going to cause any damage. It is an oversized garden ornament, nothing more than that. I cant see any reason why anyone would complain.

Park planning officers have now ordered it be removed from his home in Bwlch, near Brecon.

Mark, who lives at another property in Bwlch, said he expects to be able to move into the house within the next two to three months – and is hoping the cannon will be let off.
