College launches A Level course in cartoons

A brand new A level course will be offered in colleges later this year – and its all to do with cartoons.

The two-year course, which launches in September, involves hours of watching Disney movies and hit show Rick and Morty.

The new syllabus will be offered by colleges across the country for students who may dream of a career in the TV or film industry.

The 17 and 18 year olds will spend hours studying classic Disney films, Aardmann Animations Wallace and Gromit and Rick and Morty.

While watching the shows, the course description claims students will learn about the historical contexts and discover important industry techniques.

They will also have to analyse the works of top animators including Ray Harryhausen, Jan Svankmajer and Disney.

Students studying the course at Brockenhurst College in the New Forest, Hants, even get a trip to Los Angeles to get first-hand experience of the industry.

To pass the course, teens must complete an in-depth project, with a 1,000 word justification for it, along with a timed 15-hour exam project.

Brockenhurst College is one of the latest to offer the course, with the first one set to begin later this year.

Head of Art, Design & Photomedia at the school, which is attended by 3,000 16 to 19 year olds, Tom Hamilton said: We already have a popular Animation group, so expanding this offering to A Level offers even more opportunities.

Students who opt to study this exciting new digital course will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and be taught by lecturers who have professional and academic backgrounds within the creative sector.
