There is nothing better than a soothing hot drink on a cold winters day.

At least thats what Starbucks hope youll be thinking when you watch their new Christmas advert.

The short clip shows two men enjoying a cup of coffee inside a branch of the popular chain, with the caption: Come in from the cold.

But while it might look inviting, the ad has annoyed some people over the fact the men have been given takeaway cups when they could have been using mugs.

English Language & Linguistics student Cate Biggs, 27, said: Why have they been given plastic cups if theyre in store? Surely you should be offering reusable mugs for customers staying in to help reduce the plastic waste?

She told Metro.co.uk: Its quite a nice cosy looking advert, I just think its important that companies take some corporate responsibility to help fix the global problems they have helped to create.

They have a huge captive audience and can have a big impact if they choose to actively show they are doing things that can improve our environment.

Coffee Cups are one of the big simple switches (along with things like straws, shopping bags, and water bottles) so it would be amazing if they were really proactive in showing everyone how theyre doing all they can to make a difference.

But Starbucks have insisted their cups in the advert are reusable (Picture: Rex)

Plus education is key, if big companies like Starbucks show that the planet matters and explain why, so many people will change their behaviours. 88% of Blue Planet II users changed their habits which is amazing but theres so much more to be done.

A spokesperson for Starbucks told Metro.co.uk that the cups are reusable and must be featured in all their marketing campaigns due to company policy.

But Cate thinks the chain should make it clearer that the ones used in the advert are environmentally friendly.

Theyre not instantly recognisable as reusable so a lot of people wouldnt know, I didnt, they just look like regular disposable ones, she said.

It would be great if they made a point of showing that reusable mugs or cups are available and actively promoted discounts for people not needing disposable cups.
