Prison officer left with broken jaw as riot leaves five others injured

Six officers have been injured in a riot at a prison containing some of the most notorious prisoners in the country.

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has confirmed it is dealing with an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin, near Evesham, Worcester, which started around 9.30am today.

There are reports circulating of one prison officer having suffered a broken jaw.

Specialist officers have been sent in to deal with the outbreak, thought to have involved eight prisoners.

Long Lartin is a Category A prison which holds 500 prisoners – including some of the most dangerous offenders in the country.

An HM Prison Service spokesman said: Specially trained prison staff have been deployed to deal with an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin. Five members of staff have been treated for injuries.

We do not tolerate violence in our prisons, and are clear that those responsible will be referred to the police and could spend longer behind bars.

Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon, MP for East Leeds, said: Very concerning reports from HMP Long Lartin, which holds some of the most dangerous prisoners in the country.

It is unacceptable that prison staff face such extreme violence at work.

The government must immediately get a grip on the chaos in our prisons.

Liz Roberts, Plaid Cymru MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd, said: Hearing reports that prisoners have taken violent control of Cat A HMP Long Lartin wing with officers seriously injured.
