Dublin has been named as one of the best cities on the planet for live music alongside New York and Havana.

The capital made the rankings compiled by 'Lonely Planet' on the world's most musical cities.

Dublin was singled out along with Nairobi as a city guaranteed to produce some infectious foot-tapping and hip swaying.

The travel bible said Dublin is all about the "fleeting thrill of live performance".

"The gig selection is as eclectic as anywhere in the world but it is the unique tones of traditional Irish music that draws most visitors," it reported.

The travel tome argues that the "trad scene" is more vibrant now than it has been in 50 years.

"[There is] a wealth of young musicians experimenting and invigorating this uniquely Irish sound.

"A toe-tapping fusion of fiddles, pipes and acoustic guitars."

Dublin was joined on the list by the likes of Seville, the city of flamenco, as well as Cuban capital Havana, rocking Australian city Adelaide, as well as New York, Tokyo and Marrakesh.

The "boomba beats of Nairobi nights" ensured the African city made the list.
