Police are hunting thieves who stole a 98-year-old womans mobility scooter, took it for a joyride and then smashed it up.

The pensioner had left the vehicle in her front garden in Oak Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, on Sunday.

But when she went to use it she discovered someone had taken it.

Police said the mobility scooter had been stolen sometime between 12.30pm and 4.35pm.

Her handbag, which was inside the scooters seat compartment and contained cash, was also taken.

Inspector Glenn Longden said: This was a heartless theft of a vehicle which this elderly victim relied upon.

He confirmed they were following a number of enquiries after launching an investigation.

Witnesses are being asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 594 of 15 July 2018, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
